The Revolution for Freedom
Beginning December 28, 2025, the largest uprising since the 1979 Islamic Revolution has erupted across Iran. Millions are taking to the streets in all 31 provinces demanding an end to the regime and a transition to democratic governance.
For millions of Iranians, what is happening right now is not just about rising prices. Inflation and economic collapse may have sparked the protests, but the roots go much deeper. For nearly 47 years, generations have lived under a system that controls political power, personal freedoms, and even the right to choose their leaders. These protests reflect decades of frustration and a demand for dignity, freedom, and self-determination.
The regime’s response has been brutal. Reports indicate that 40,000+ have been killed, 350,000+ injured, and thousands arrested, along with nationwide internet blackouts imposed to silence the country. Journalists, activists, and ordinary protesters have been targeted, leaving families grieving and communities shaken.
And yet, people keep showing up in the streets.
For those of us in the Queen’s and Kingston community, the least we can do is pay attention and refuse to let their voices be drowned out. Talk about it. Share accurate, credible information. Support human rights organizations. Have real, honest conversations. Because when people inside a country are being silenced, the outside world matters.
Every voice helps. You don’t have to do everything. But your voice does matter.
